TL;DR: How to create a Kubernetes setup of a open source alternative to Google Translate
Motivation
Text translation is a usual task for many IT projects. If you want to translate something you probably use a service like Google Translate. It’s a good service but if you want to use via API, probably you need to pay for its service. It’s something logic. But if you need a very intensive use of it, the bill can be huge too. In the other hand, if you don’t want vendor locking or you prefer an open source stack, Google Translate is not the best option.
Entering LibreTranslate
LibreTranslate is a downloadable service that you can install where you want (on-premise, cloud, …) and it’s open source.
Indeed, OpenTranslate is just a service wrapper around Argos translate.
Argos Translate is an open source project (MIT License) which implements a lot of translation models: English-Spanish, English-Chinese, etc.
The models are trained with the OpenNMT system.
LibreTranslate can be deployed in your on-premise server, cloud or even your Kubernetes cluster. It is our case.
